The Telangana Police, in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunication (DoT), has successfully traced and recovered more than 2,200 lost or missing mobile devices within a short period of less than two months since the launch of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. The CEIR portal, aimed at curbing mobile theft and counterfeit devices, began functioning in Telangana on April 19, 2023.
Hyderabad(June, 19) : On April 13, 2023, Anjani Kumar-IPS, DGP, Telangana, inaugurated a one-day hands-on training session for 60 master trainers and distributed CEIR user IDs to all 780 police stations across 31 police units on April 18, 2023. Mahesh M. Bhagwat-IPS, Addl. DGP, CID, was designated as the Nodal Officer for the CEIR portal in the state of Telangana. The CEIR portal was developed by the Department of Telecommunications, and Telangana was selected as the pilot project for its implementation.
Under the effective monitoring of ADGP, CID, as the “Super User,” the CEIR portal has shown significant progress. In the first month of its launch, over 1,000 lost or missing mobile devices were traced and returned to their rightful owners. Additionally, within a span of 25 days, from May 23 to June 18, 2023, another 1,160 mobile devices were recovered. SM. Vijay Kumar-IPS, from the Intelligence Department, Telangana State, played a crucial role in guiding the concept of the CEIR portal, which was then developed by the DoT.
The consolidated data from the CEIR portal of Telangana, covering the period from April 20 to June 18, 2023, reveals that 34,200 mobile devices were blocked, and 5,970 traceability reports were received, accounting for 17.46% of the total blocked devices. Out of the blocked devices, 2,219 were unblocked and handed over to their rightful owners, constituting 37.17% of the blocked devices.
While all Police Units have contributed to the tracing of lost or stolen mobile phones, notable contributions have come from the Cyberabad Commissionerate, with 300 mobile devices traced, followed by Warangal Commissionerate with 175, Rachakonda with 148, and Kamareddy District with 131 mobile devices.
To provide a more user-friendly service to the citizens of Telangana, an integration of the CEIR application with the CCTNS citizen portal has been completed. It is encouraged that citizens of Telangana utilize this service or visit their respective Police Stations to upload information on the CEIR portal in order to recover their lost or missing mobile devices.   K. Suresh, Inspector of IT Cell, CID, and other police officials, in the usage of the CEIR application
