Hyderabad(June, 17): Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali courted controversy on Saturday by making a statement suggesting that women wearing revealing clothing contribute to issues, while responding to a media question about some Muslim students being asked to remove their burqas at an examination center.
He says, “By the way, everyone has the freedom to wear any dress they prefer, but the traditional attire of our country, India, is truly remarkable and distinct from European countries. In India, you will find a variety of styles and choices when it comes to clothing. For instance, some people drape their saree pallu over their heads gracefully, while others opt for more modest clothing that covers their entire body. It is this rich diversity and unique cultural expression that makes Indian attire stand out”.
A video containing the comments quickly went viral on various social media platforms, prompting swift reactions from the public. Many questioned Mahmood Ali’s judgment in dictating what constitutes the ‘appropriate’ attire for women, while leaders from both the BJP and Congress parties also joined in the criticism.
