Counterfeit Currency Racket Busted in Hyderabad: SOT and LB Nagar Police Apprehend 3-Member Gang

Hyderabad(Dec, 22): In a significant breakthrough, the Special Operations Team (SOT) from LB Nagar Zone, in collaboration with LB Nagar police, under the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate, successfully dismantled a three-member gang engaged in a counterfeit currency operation. The apprehended suspects, identified as Mohammad Bahauddin alias Jaweed, a 53-year-old senior assistant formerly associated with the Forest Department, Taxi Driver Jampani Anderson (37 years old), and Maggidi Kishan (27 years old), a taxi driver, were attempting to deceive unsuspecting individuals by distributing fake Manoranjan bank notes.

The arrest, made under Cr. No. 1792/2023 U/s.420, R/w 511 R/W, 34 IPC of LB Nagar Police Station, Rachakonda Police Commissionerate, exposed the elaborate operation. The gang had amassed a significant sum of duplicate Rs.500 notes totaling 60 lakhs. The seized items included an Ertiga car with registration number TS-01-EP-4946, a duplicate number plate (MH-12-R-6426), six mobile phones, a police fiber lathi, and a whistle.

The primary orchestrator, Mohammad Bahauddin, had turned to a life of crime after his suspension, working as a real estate broker. He had connections with Salman from Nizamabad, who mentored him in the art of currency forgery. Bahauddin, in turn, recruited Anderson and Kishan, both taxi drivers, to execute their nefarious plans.

The modus operandi involved identifying vulnerable targets, enticing them with a promise of exchanging genuine currency for counterfeit notes at a ratio of 1:3, and then absconding from the scene under the guise of police intervention. The gang’s criminal activities spanned across various locations, including Hyderabad City, Pandharkawda in Maharashtra, and Nirmal, Armoor, and Nizamabad in Telangana.

The recent operation on December 21, 2023, unfolded when the gang purchased Manoranjan bank notes at Begum Bazar in Hyderabad. However, their activities were curtailed when the police intercepted them near Sitara Grand Hotel, LB Nagar, during a routine vehicle check. A subsequent search led to the discovery of 60 lakhs in counterfeit currency, and the accused were promptly apprehended.

The meticulous efforts of the SOT LB Nagar Zone Team, guided by G. Sudheer Babu, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Rachakonda, and directed by K. Muralidhar, DCP, SOT, LB Nagar-Maheshwaram, have not only dismantled the immediate threat but are actively pursuing the criminal history of the accused and identifying potential victims.
