Hyderabad :Â On the occasion of International Geo Diversity Day 2023, the Deccan Heritage Academy Trust (DHAT), in collaboration with the Centre for Deccan Studies and JBR Architecture College, orchestrated a memorable “GEO HERITAGE WALK” followed by an enlightening “TALK ON GEO DIVERSITY.” The event took place at the iconic Moula Ali Pahad in Moulali Secunderabad, commencing at 4:30 p.m. on October 6th, 2023. The program was graced by the esteemed presence of Prof. Er. Veda Kumar Manikonda, Chairman of the Deccan Heritage Academy, who presided over the proceedings. Sri. Kamatham Mahender Reddy, retired Director of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), graced the event as the Chief Guest. The distinguished gathering also included Sri Ramoju Haragopal, a noted historian and Convenor of Kottha Telangana Charitra; Prof. K. P. Rao, former Director of the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Andhra Pradesh, and various other dignitaries.
In his address, K. Mahender Reddy emphasized the historical significance of geological sites in Telangana, mentioning recent discoveries of dinosaur fossils, tortoise remains, and ancient footprints dating back 160 to 200 million years. He underscored the irreplaceable nature of these geological treasures and called upon both the government and the public to unite in preserving these valuable assets.
Prof. Veda Kumar Manikonda highlighted the rich geological heritage of Telangana, which spans from ancient rock formations to remarkable geomorphological diversity. He lamented the neglect of historical sites in the region, especially those dating back to the Stone Age and Megalithic Iron Age periods, and emphasized the importance of preserving these sites.
The event also featured an audio message from Chakkilam Venugopal Rao, Director General (Retd.) of GSI, stressing the significance of geo diversity. Prof. K. P. Rao discussed the culturally developed area of Moula Ali Pahad and the need for further excavation to unearth its historical treasures. Sri. Ramoju Haragopal shed light on the area’s importance during the Qutubshahi Period and Nizam’s Rule, including its use as a racecourse.
