Vijayawada(Aug, 26):The Vijayawada Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate recently thwarted a gold smuggling attempt, intercepting a suspicious car at the Bollapalli Toll Plaza. The inspection led to the discovery of nearly 4.3 kilograms of gold believed to be from Dubai and Sri Lanka, with erased foreign markings to mask its illicit origin. Subsequent investigations uncovered an additional 6.8 kilograms of gold jewelry and foreign currency worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs at the suspect’s premises.
The individual was arrested and remanded to judicial custody by the Special Judge for Economic Offences in Visakhapatnam. This seizure is part of the Commissionerate’s ongoing efforts, resulting in 70 kilograms of smuggled gold valued at about Rs. 40 crores being confiscated over the past two years.
