New Delhi: In a groundbreaking move, Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) at O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) launched India’s first-ever Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programme in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Law. The announcement was made during a seminar on “Artificial Intelligence and Law,” graced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal as the Chief Guest.
The minister emphasized the importance of embracing technological advancements while addressing ethical concerns like data privacy and AI bias. “The human element will always remain essential. If used responsibly, AI can revolutionize areas like legal translations and resolving court backlogs,” he said, inviting public feedback on AI-related challenges.
The seminar saw participation from JGU’s Chancellor Naveen Jindal, Supreme Court judges, policymakers, and legal scholars. Founding Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar highlighted AI’s transformative potential in legal analytics, dispute resolution, and law enforcement while stressing the need to address ethical and privacy concerns.
Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Dutta called AI’s impact on the legal field “revolutionary but uncertain,” while Attorney General R. Venkataramani underlined the evolving relationship between law and technology. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta cautioned against over-reliance on AI in judicial decisions, advocating for human judgment’s irreplaceable role in ensuring justice.
The newly introduced B.A. programme aims to bridge the gap between technology and law, equipping students for careers in technology law, AI policy-making, and ethical governance. JGU’s initiative positions India as a leader in AI and legal education, fostering innovation and addressing societal challenges.
Senior Advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi aptly summarized the sentiment: “AI must remain a servant, not the master. By integrating AI responsibly, we can advance justice while preserving human ethics and judgment.”
The programme reaffirms JGU’s commitment to academic innovation, preparing the next generation of legal professionals for the AI revolution.
