Telangana’s Remarkable Surge in MBBS Seats: From Bottom to the Top

Hyderabad(Sep, 8) : On September 15, 2023, a momentous milestone awaits Telangana as the government prepares to inaugurate nine medical colleges in 9 districts of the state. This historic move positions Telangana as the sole state in India where every district will house a government medical college, a feat proudly announced by Minister KTR. These medical institutions are slated to grace Jangaon, Nirmal, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Sircilla, Asifabad, Bhupalpally, Vikarabad, and Khammam, promising to usher in a new era of healthcare access.

Minister KTR, during a teleconference with district Ministers and MLAs, called for grand celebrations at district headquarters, complete with rallies featuring no less than 20,000 participants. He encouraged active involvement of public representatives and stressed the significance of programs highlighting the myriad benefits these medical colleges will bring to the region, emphasizing the engagement of youth and students.

The possibility of Chief Minister KCR personally inaugurating one of the medical colleges on September 15 adds an extra layer of significance to this momentous occasion, while Health Minister Harish Rao is set to inaugurate the Kamareddy medical college.

Minister Harish Rao noted a remarkable transformation in Telangana’s medical education landscape. From having the lowest number of MBBS seats in 2014, the state now leads the nation with 22 MBBS seats for every 100,000 individuals—an achievement unmatched in India. He revealed that Telangana contributed 43% of the total increase in MBBS seats across the country this year, despite not receiving a single medical college from the Central Government. Underlining the historical disparity, Harish Rao recalled that only two medical colleges were established in Telangana during the 50-plus years of the Congress party’s tenure.

Before the Telangana government’s inception, aspiring medical students often had to venture to other states or even abroad to pursue their dreams. However, thanks to CM KCR’s dedicated efforts, Telanganites can now pursue medical studies within their state, eliminating the need for relocation and ushering in a brighter era for medical education in Telangana
