Hyderabad(Sep, 1) :Â In a significant development for the state of Telangana, Corning Inc. has made a landmark decision to establish India’s first Gorilla Glass manufacturing facility within its borders. This pioneering investment marks a new chapter in India’s manufacturing landscape and underscores Telangana’s growing prominence in the electronics industry. The proposed facility will be dedicated to the production of cover glass for leading players in the smartphone sector.
Corning Inc., a Fortune 500 materials science company headquartered in New York, boasts a legacy spanning 172 years, specializing in glass science, ceramics science, and optical physics. Notably, they are the innovators behind Gorilla Glass, a highly durable glass that finds widespread application in portable devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.
This ambitious endeavor by Corning, involving an investment of INR 934 Crores, alongside their partners, signifies a strategic move that is poised to catalyze the smartphone manufacturing ecosystem not only in Telangana but also across India. Moreover, this initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 800 individuals.
Telangana’s Minister for ITE&C and Industries, K T Rama Rao, recently met with key representatives of Corning Inc. in New York, including John Bayne, Senior Vice President, Ravi Kumar, Global Operations Executive, and Sarah Cartmell, Director Government Affairs. Minister Rao expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Telangana is rapidly evolving as a hub for electronics manufacturing, owing to the state’s concerted efforts over the past nine years. With the recent substantial investment by Foxconn earlier this year and now Corning’s commitment to Telangana, we are poised for a transformative phase in smartphone manufacturing, not only within the state but throughout India.”
Key officials including Principal Secretary for Industries & IT, Jayesh Ranjan, Special Secretary for Investment Promotion & NRI Affairs, Vishnu Vardhan Reddy, and Director Electronics, Sujai Karampuri, were present during the discussions
