Telangana Police’s Child Safety Project Receives Prestigious FICCI Award

Rachakonda Police Worksite School Project Wins FICCI Smart Police Award for Child Safety

New Delhi(Sep, 15) : The Worksite School Project of Rachakonda Police Commissionerate in Telangana, which started in January 2017 under the leadership of CP Mahesh M Bhagwat IPS, has achieved recognition and awards for its efforts. In September 2023, the project received the Smart Police Award in the “Child Safety” category at a conference organized by FICCI in New Delhi. Telangana DGP Anjani Kumar praised the initiative for providing basic education to children rescued from hazardous brick kiln industries, thereby safeguarding their rights.

The project’s journey to recognition began when FICCI invited entries for the Smart Policing Awards in 2022. Among 117 entries from various organizations, the Worksite Schools project was shortlisted under the “Child Safety” category.

The award ceremony took place in September 2023, with notable figures like BSF DG (Retd) Prakash Singh and others honoring Mahesh M. Bhagwat IPS with the Smart Policing award.

The project’s origins can be traced back to January 2017 when it rescued 370 children of Odisha migrant workers from brick kilns in Choutuppal and Bommalaramaram mandals of Bhongir Yadadri District. The rehabilitation efforts involved collaboration with various agencies, including district collectors, brick kiln owners, and civil society organizations. These worksite schools operate from January to May each year, providing education to the rescued children in their mother tongues. To date, 6,500 Odia children and 55 children from Maharashtra have been rescued and educated through this project.

This project’s success lies in its multi-partner approach, ensuring the strict implementation of the Right to Education Act and zero tolerance for child labor. It has received praise from Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Satyarthi and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Telangana DGP Sri Anjani Kumar IPS also commended the initiative for bringing accolades to Telangana Police, and Mahesh Bhagwat IPS acknowledged the contributions of various stakeholders in making this project a success, including government officials, NGOs, and brick kiln owners
