Supreme Court Grants Bail to BRS MLC K Kavitha in Delhi Liquor Policy Case

Hyderabad : The Supreme Court granted bail on Tuesday to BRS MLC K Kavitha in the Delhi Liquor Policy case after she had spent 161 days in judicial custody since her arrest on March 15. The court expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation progress by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), deeming her continued detention unnecessary. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Kavitha, argued that the probe had been completed and cited the Supreme Court’s previous decision to grant bail to AAP leader Manish Sisodia, a co-accused in the case.

During the hearing, the bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan questioned the evidence presented by the ED and CBI, asking for concrete material linking Kavitha to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. The Additional Solicitor General, S V Raju, accused Kavitha of tampering with evidence by destroying her mobile phone, a claim dismissed as “bogus” by Rohatgi.

The Supreme Court had earlier sought responses from the CBI and ED following Kavitha’s challenge to the Delhi High Court’s July 1 order that denied her bail. The High Court had labeled her as a primary conspirator in the alleged scam related to the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22, which has since been scrapped. Kavitha, who was arrested by the ED in Hyderabad and later by the CBI, has consistently denied all allegations against her.
