Srinagar (J&K): On Wednesday, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, marking the first elected government since the revocation of the region’s special status in 2019. Abdullah, alongside five ministers, emphasized regional balance by appointing Surender Choudhary from Jammu as deputy chief minister.
The Congress party, part of the pre-poll alliance, opted not to take ministerial positions, citing dissatisfaction over the lack of statehood restoration. The ceremony, attended by prominent leaders from the opposition, symbolized a significant political shift after years of direct central rule. Abdullah, a third-generation leader from the influential Abdullah family, faces numerous challenges ahead, as expressed by his father, NC president Farooq Abdullah.
