The interaction was chaired by S. Rashmi Perumal, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Zone, and was attended by around 25 transgender persons.
During the meeting, participants shared various challenges faced by the transgender community, including lack of inclusiveness, limited social acceptance and restricted livelihood opportunities. Concerns were also discussed regarding public complaints related to nuisance and alleged extortion during social functions such as marriages, house-warming ceremonies and other events, where large sums are reportedly demanded in the name of blessings.
The DCP encouraged community members to take up skill development, learn new trades, explore self-employment avenues and adopt dignified means of livelihood. She assured that genuine grievances would be taken up with the concerned government departments for appropriate welfare measures, support and rehabilitation.
