In a landmark moment for India’s maritime power, the Indian Navy will simultaneously commission two advanced frontline stealth frigates — INS Udaygiri (F35) and INS Himgiri (F34) — at Visakhapatnam on 26 August 2025. This is the first time two major surface combatants from two different Indian shipyards will join the fleet on the same day, marking a significant leap in naval modernisation. Built under Project 17A, Udaygiri — the 100th ship designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau — has been constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, while Himgiri is the first P17A frigate from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.
Displacing about 6,700 tons, these indigenously designed vessels feature stealth shaping, advanced weaponry including supersonic missiles and medium-range air defence systems, and state-of-the-art propulsion under the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Supported by over 200 MSMEs and thousands of jobs, their commissioning will stand as a proud testament to India’s self-reliance in warship design and construction.
