Hyderabad : The Telangana Transport Department has introduced new rules for obtaining a driving licence, effective April 1, 2026, aimed at improving road safety in line with recent directives, including emphasis from the Supreme Court of India. Under the revised system, applicants must first clear a mandatory 3-hour online Road Safety Awareness Modules test divided into six segments covering traffic rules, signs, driver responsibilities, and safe driving behaviour before applying for a Learner’s Licence (LLR).
This creates a three-stage process: clearing the online awareness test (with certificate), passing the computerized LLR test, and finally qualifying the practical driving test at an RTO track for a permanent licence. The initiative is designed to strengthen awareness from the outset and reduce road accidents, and applicants are advised to check official portals like the state transport website or the national Parivahan Sarathi platform for detailed guidelines, module access, and updates, while noting that existing procedures for renewals and other services remain unchanged unless specified.
