Director of SPG Arun K. Sinha Passes Away, Leaves Legacy of Dedication

New Delhi (Sep, 6): Arun K. Sinha, an IPS officer from the 1987 batch hailing from the Kerala cadre, held the position of Additional Director General of Police for Special Service and Traffic within the state before taking on the pivotal role of leading the Special Protection Group (SPG). Notably, the position of SPG head had remained vacant for approximately 15 months before his appointment. In a significant move, Sinha’s service was extended, and he was re-employed as the Director General (DG) of the SPG just one day before his scheduled retirement on May 31 of this year. This extension was made possible through the approval of the Appointments Committee (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It’s important to highlight that this extension was granted as a temporary upgradation, and a similar extension had been cleared by the ACC in the previous year.

Established in 1985, the Special Protection Group (SPG) is a prestigious and elite force with a special mission to provide protection to the current and former Prime Ministers of India, as well as their immediate family members. The SPG was formed in response to the tragic assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, underscoring the critical importance of safeguarding the nation’s top leadership.
