Conjunctivitis Outbreak in Hyderabad and India Sparks Health Concerns

Hyderabad : Eye flu, also known as conjunctivitis, is rapidly spreading like wildfire in Hyderabad and other parts of India. The exponential uptick in cases has raised concerns among doctors, who note that the younger population is particularly affected. This highly contagious infection demands strict adherence to proper hygiene practices to curb its spread.

The intense monsoon rains, causing flooding and waterlogging, are believed to be the primary culprits behind the swift transmission of the infection in Hyderabad, Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Northeast. To combat the rising instances, many schools have implemented preventive measures, urging students to practice frequent handwashing, avoid touching their eyes, refrain from sharing hand towels, and maintain social distancing.

In light of the conjunctivitis cases reported in Telangana, it is crucial for everyone to heed the advice of the Medical & Health Department, Telangana Government. Being a highly contagious eye infection, conjunctivitis can spread rapidly in crowded places and close-contact settings, making it essential to prioritize personal and public health by following recommended precautions.
Here are some general precautions you can take to reduce the risk of spreading or contracting conjunctivitis:

Maintain good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially after touching your face, eyes, or surfaces that may be contaminated.

Avoid touching your eyes: Try not to rub or touch your eyes with unwashed hands, as it can transfer the virus or bacteria to your eyes.

Use separate towels and personal items: Avoid sharing towels, pillows, eye makeup, or other personal items that may come into contact with the eyes.

Disinfect frequently-touched surfaces: Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, and electronics.

Practice social distancing: Limit close contact with individuals who have symptoms of conjunctivitis or any other infectious illness.

Wear protective eyewear: If you are in close contact with someone who has conjunctivitis, consider wearing protective eyewear to reduce the risk of transmission.

Seek medical advice: If you or anyone in your household experiences symptoms of conjunctivitis, such as redness, itchiness, discharge, or increased tear production, seek medical advice promptly.
